2005 Awards Party

The North Carolina Tigers held a successful 2005 Season Awards night on Saturday, December 17th, 2005 at Woody@CityMarket in downtown Raleigh. With over 45 players, staff, supporters and guests in attendance, the night was also a chance to recognize and remember the fun and reasons why the Club exists and look back on the some of the achievements from 2005.

The evening began with the ever popular informal “Gag” awards voted for, and by, the players, which were given out (to scenes of much laughter!) by Club President Wes McCallister. Next was an “Aussie style” Best and Fairest awards (MVP) presentation. This is where the game votes are given out on a game by game basis, with an updated leader board after each of the seasons games. After gaining an early lead, Tigers Captain, Jason Heathcote ran out the winner with a high of 27 votes, followed by equal second place newcomer James Carter and the popular Philip Schriebman both with 17. Newcomer Pat Shufelt, came in at 3rd place with 13 votes and clearly also had a great impact on the game after only a few training sessions and showed how quickly this sport can be learned and mastered with the right attitude and plenty of enthusiasm.

The Tigers presented the inaugural Clubman of the Year award by honoring the popular Scott Morris for his all-round efforts, and willingness to grow the Club and the sport on and off the field in 2005. Scott joined the Club in 2001 and has now contributed in playing, leading trainings, umpiring, and this year added boundary umpiring at the USAFL Nationals to his growing list of skills and experience.

Other awards presented on the evening were:
Leading goal kicker - Jason Heathcote
Hardest at training - Wes McCallister
Striving for excellence - Hamp Maxwell
Most determined - Wes Hayutin
Most improved - Phil Schriebman

The Tigers next season begins with pre-season training and the Annual General Meeting to be being held in January 2006. The first EAFL scheduled season game is in April 2006 in Raleigh.

They quickly scored three goals and jumped on top 1.0.(6) to 4.5.(29) at quarter time. The second and third quarters were played fairly evenly. Hawks remained in front at half and 3/4 time: 3.1.(19) to 7.9.(51) and 5.2.(32) to 11.14.(80). The final quarter was scrappy as both teams ran hard for the ball. Kangaroos defeat the Tigers
It was a tough day for the Tigers as they played host to the Etobicoke Kangaroos (Toronto) in a pre-season International matchup. From the opening bounce, the game became a tough physical contest. While having the majority of possessions and keeping the pressure on the Roos, at the end of the first quarter the Tigers found themselves down 1.6.(12) to 3.5.(23). Although disappointed by their conversion rate, one goal in seven chances, the Tigers took their positions for the 2nd quarter with a sense of confidence. The Kangaroos quickly turned the tide. They played their best quarter of football on the day. With strong center play and the wind at their backs they scored six unanswered goals. The Tigers would not recover from the deficit created. At halftime they found themselves down 1.9.(15) to 9.10.(64). The Tigers kept their heads high. Playing with the toughness they are known for, the Tigers won the 3rd quarter. However, it was too little and too late. The day belonged to the Kangaroos. Showing character and class, the two sides played hard until the final horn.
The final score: Kangaroos 17.14.(116) def. Tigers 4.16.(40)

The Tigers would like to thank the Kangaroos for making the trip to North Carolina and hope a lasting club bond will persist. Good luck Roos in the upcoming OAFL Season.
